I suggest to use different colours for "connected/connecting/disconnected" state. Or still use checkmark. or some better idea from UX people (I'll ask them)

creating configs from scratch is a bit weird. for example, iphone, android do not have anything, just "import" from url and everybody is hust happy with that.

why to have timeouts at both openvpn (config files) and openvpn-gui? are there cases which cannot be resolved with timeouts specified at openvpn config files?

there's already "automatic start" feature. do you mean also "automatic connect" ?
