I'm not entirely sure how this is possible b/c we "roll up" metadata into larger objects. We could keep every sets old metadata, but it seems a bit wasteful.

An alternative is that the only important metadata is count and we could approximate the count.

I think the first option is better. I'm not sure how much metadata people use on lists.
