Transient alpha sometimes inserts up or down

Using transient alpha for a single character sometimes inserts an up or down arrow. This is hard to reproduce. It seems to be happening more often when entering the editor.

It seems quasi-impossible to trigger on USB. On battery, the sequence Up-A-!A-!Up from an empty editor window seems to trigger it relatively reliably.
