Hmm, well I think of it like a stoplight. If it is currently red then everything is stopped. If it is green it is going.

FWIW I find the current approach confusing as well. Practically speaking I feel that using green for start and red for stop makes more sense. It is rather obvious if the trace is running at ≤1 s intervals, and if it is not you can read the Click to Stop easily enough.
