Tag slugs don't update when changing title

We're using tags to display search results related to users, so Tag Manager works great to get an overview of tags in use and change newly generated ones (we allow users to add new tags to their profiles). However a problem has cropped up that the tag.slug does not refresh when changing a title, breaking the functionality of the search (we use the slug for the data-value which posts the search results).

Is there any way to update the tag.slug, or is it a limitation of Craft?
