Please add to standard gedit package

This is not really an issue, but: why the plugin is not part of standard gedit plugins? It would be far easier to use it in normal environments. Thanks.

Hi pcav, I guess because it's not good enough yet. The current working version is still in a feature branch, also. I have refactored the code a lot, but the manual compiling is now a missing feature, and the automatic compiling of reST is a bit painful. It's mainly a usability question (for both features and handling). I still have open issues on my todo list, but I need to have some progress on another (open source) project first before spending time again here. Sorry! If you want to give it a try, go ahead, clone the feature branch!

Thanks a lot. I'm also on other tasks now (my focus is GIS, in fact), but if there is something I can do to support the inclusion of your work when ready, just let me know.

Va benissimo, @pcav Paolo. Just keep bugging me, so I don't forget! :smirk: I keep this issue open.

I would suggest to automatically build a .deb package (and whatever target format is requested), and offer it for download on a GitHub Pages site generated automatically. It's really not that difficult, I did it years ago.

If anyone reading this is interested please file a PR, and we'll work on that together. I really want to do that only if there is heavy request.

Sorry, but why not a standard Debian package upstream?

pcav avatar Jun 05 '16 05:06 pcav

First things first.

  • [ ] Someone will need to write files for packaging. This is what the [PR welcome] label is about.
  • [ ] Subsequently, someone will need to do the actual packaging. This is what the "automatically build a .deb package" is about.

Are you willing to make one of those as a PR?

Sorry, my priority is on other sw, and my time is quite limited. Can we try to contact DD responsible for the gedit packaging? I will support this, and help with early testing.

Please go ahead! Whatever you do to get this issue of yours help getting resolved is appreciated.

Done: https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=826540 BTW, have you tried integrating your plugin upstream? Would gedit devs be positive about this?

Personally, I think the plugin is not good enough yet (see the open issues for examples). In the current state shipping the plugin with gedit would probably put shame on the gedit project, so I do expect they would refuse to include it for good reasons.

But maybe I'm wrong and they'll accept it. If you would open a request with them that may help.

OK, thanks for clarifying.
