Generate transparent plots with white and black overlaid

I've forgot how this is called, but when working with black or white text on transparent background, one often uses the opposite as an outline/overlay. Does this have a name, I would really like to know?

I searched for how to do this with gnuplot, but haven't found anything quickly.
