connection to this site is not secure certificate is not trusted proceed anyway

I get the error "connection to this site is not secure certificate is not trusted proceed anyway"

I only see it on one phone running LineageOS 17.1/Android 10, other phones with the same OS do not have the issue

It only appears to be on sites that include links to 3rd parties. So https://html.duckduckgo.com/html/ and https://wikipedia.org are fine, but sites like https://bbc.co.uk are not.

The default browser, and Firefox are not showing this issue.

It's probably a "just me" issue but I'm posting a issue to see if anyone else has seen this or not.

It's not just you the security check feature needs to be looked at. You may also want to checkout Fulguris which is "lightning reborn". Though, at this point, it has most likely that same issue.

@kenfallon Try updating your Android System Webview app.

This usually is the fix for me. The reason that the other browsers don't have this issue is because they use their own webview.

Lightning uses the one built into the device, which is why it is so fast and also partly why the app itself is so much smaller.

It seems that Android System Webview gets updated about once a month or so.

For people that abhor the Play Store (like me) that means that you need to use another source for the update.

Also, be aware that there are Beta versions available. These are typically larger, and have a different signature.

Even with the newest version of LineageOS using webview version 88.0.4324.152 I get this issue. Is it a problem with lineageos' webview specifically? I guess I'll try bromite or something for now, but it should be fixed system-wide imo. EDIT: Even with bromite this remains an issue.

Same issue with LOS 17.1 + the lastest Android System Webview. I tried other webview based browsers ---> same issue.

Google recently had major issues with a bunk Webview update, and have pushed yet another update.

Perhaps check to be sure you have the latest Webview version (yes, again), or it may be fixed in the next update.

Webview is updated quite regularly.

I highly doubt that has anything to do with it - I've been having this issue for the better part of a year. I was hoping this would be one of those that'd magically go away.

I can confirm it's not a webview issue, I had the same issue months ago.

I have been using Lightning and varients of it for years. When I do see that message, the vast majority of the time it is due to Android System Webview having a recent update.

Perhaps you should try Midori, SmartCookieWeb, or IDM+?

Current Webview version is 89.0.4389.105

So, if your version is anything less than that, you can expect to have this problem.

webview is up to date as I and the others already said. It's not because we didnt install the lastest webview. I think it's a LOS + webview based browsers (all of them) issue.
