The page shows invalid_api_key and asks me to provide my api key when I ask the AI a question

If you are self-deploying, make sure you fill in the correct environment variable OPENAI_API_KEY from OpenAI API key

Not self-deploying. Used it as a user. Or do I have to fill in an API key before using the project

Sorry, our API Key limit has been exhausted, so the demo site is not available. And it doesn't have the ability to manually enter an Api Key, so you need to have a key and self-deploy it - for now.

You can use Anse to enter your own key and use it.
