The unicode arrow example shows a question mark in the thumbnail (https://altair-viz.github.io/gallery/index.html#line-charts):

Out of curiosity, have you tried generating this locally? vl-convert should be able to handle this as long as the chosen font has the character included, but the font that's bundled with vl-convert (Liberation Sans) probably doesn't have it. We might be able to install additional fonts in CI.
