[Feature Request(s)] Icons & tags for points, add files to map

Hi,

I'm very new to GPSPrune, and I'm happy that I found such a capable mapping application. Some additional features I'd personally like to see are:

  • The ability to assign an icon when creating a point and have that icon displayed instead of just a dot. Allowing the user to import their own icons would be a great bonus.
  • The ability to create text 'tags' as part of the metadata for a point, along with the the ability to selectively filter the points that are displayed based on their tags. I realize that I can kind of do this by just putting different points into different files and only opening the ones I want, but there may be subsets of points in different files that I'd like to see together - for example, all of the foraging locations in a certain area that I've discovered while on multiple hikes
  • The ability to add files to a specific location, similar to adding photos and audio clips. For example, if I have a PDF flier for an event that's taking place along a route I create, I can add that PDF file to the map at the appropriate location and just click on it to open it when I get there
  • The ability to specify one or more point/track/photo files on the command line when starting GPSPrune and have them automatically opened

Thanks for all of the fantastic work on GPSPrune!

John

I just though of something - for the 3rd item (adding a file to a location on the map), it might make more sense to have an 'add link' to a location - that way you could link to a local file, a web page, etc. using a generic URL.

Sorry - I thought I'd already replied to this thread but it seems not. I'll go through the points:

  • The ability to assign an icon when creating a point This isn't currently possible, but you can select the icon to use for all named points in the settings if you want to use one of the included icons instead of a dot.

  • Allowing the user to import their own icons would be a great bonus. Again, not (yet) possible, but it has been asked for and it may come in the future. Possibly this will just be again a single icon to use for all named points.

You can however assign different colours to the icons for different point types, and again this is in the settings.

  • The ability to create text 'tags' as part of the metadata for a point, along with the the ability to selectively filter the points that are displayed based on their tags. You can define comments or descriptions, but currently there are no filters.

One way to do pick certain points from several files would be to name the points with a prefix (like "mushroom_one"). Then load all the files, rearrange the waypoints alphabetically, and then crop the track to just contain the now consecutive waypoints.

  • The ability to add files to a specific location, similar to adding photos and audio clips. Just follow the example of the photos in gpx files, and include a URL to the file you want to link to. GpsPrune will not be able to launch a pdf viewer but some other gpx file viewers might.

  • The ability to specify one or more point/track/photo files on the command line when starting GPSPrune and have them automatically opened Yes, this is supported. Did you already try this, and if so what happened?
