Quality of own logos

When using own logos including text for signatures, the quality of the logo printed on the pdf is not sufficient and looks artifacted and somehow distorted. This happens regardless of the image format (gif, png, jpeg) and the level of scaling when inserting the image.

Is there any best practice regarding the logo to obtain sufficient results?
