Feature source names on search results more prominently

We currently do not make clear what source a piece of media is from until the user clicks on a single result. Displaying this information on the search result views may have some benefits:

  • We're making the user more aware of the available sources
  • Users may learn they have preferences of some sources and use the filters more, and get more relevant results
  • We're making the sources more prominent, which feels in-line with the spirit of attribution fostered by the CC licenses

There might be a few ways to do this, with showing a logo for each provider on the image hover state and in the audio track + boxed layouts, or fitting the textual name of the provider in those components instead.

To make users more aware of the available sources, homepage plays a more significant role, in my opinion. There is room to polish the design and convey what sources are connected to Openverse.

I disagree with the learning point on users learning preferences and using the filters more. Openverse design is very intuitive as its design is very similar to stock sites; it speaks for itself. Results layouts and navigation components do not change much among competitors; therefore, users don't need to relearn them once landing in Openverse.

On the other hand, people will use the filters more as long as filters are useful. That means they are easy to use and work as expected.

We have discussed before the source prominence but in the single result context, where the attribution process occurs. I would like to hear other thoughts on the need to highlight sources on the result page.
