If its our string that is invalid UTF-8 it is our bug I'd think.

`menu.c` is needs some work and `xtext.c` needs a ton of work. If somebody wants to rebase https://github.com/hexchat/hexchat/tree/xtext-cairo Or ideally rewrite based on the improvements here: https://github.com/leeter/hexchat/blob/cpp-dev/src/fe-gtk/xtext.cpp

The current textbox is a 100% custom mess. It has in the past had a direct port to GTK3 but is such a mess that it was full of bugs...

More details would be great. Your DNS returns ipv6 even though you don't have it? Does just connecting directly to an ipv6 address repro this issue for you?

Well you could have bad routes for ipv4 too, I don't really consider that an applications problem. That said there is no harm in it trying ipv4 quicker I suppose.
