Close Last Tab

I find it incredibly annoying that there is no obvious way to close the last tab that is open. I like clearing my window when I'm done working on things.

I realize that ctrl+w closes the tab, but there is no button visible to do it. I forget the shortcut command all the time. Why can't the X button remain visible?
