Create item based on barcode by looking up online

Open TWiStErRob opened this issue 9 years ago • 10 comments

There should be another app that handles the barcode scanning/lookup part to not need internet dependency. (again, may restrict to Android 6+ and handle internally).

What we need from the external intent: barcode, looked up product name, image of product.

Use case from a user:

So being able to add items to a cabinet, for instance, would be so much quicker if there was an option to do simply scan the barcode and have the metadata filled in automatically--ex: the title of the book / name of the box of cereal; the downloaded image would be the cover photo, and the description would have whatever the description was attached in the metadata.

I am curious if it has this function. To add item or look it up via a barcode? I am very interested in this ability

@nomatica not yet, that's why it's "open", but thanks for "voting" for the feature. Would you mind describing how would you like to use the barcode?

When adding the item, you would have the option to scan the barcode. The name contained in the barcode would be entered into the title of the item. An additional feature would be looking up the item online and auto populating the picture and other details about the item automatically.

Ah, I see, in that case only the second part is possible (if there's an online service that gives that info, which is the hardest part of this).

A normal barcode, for example https://mk0xucobucefof4dkp4y.kinstacdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/Jan-27-2015-Types-of-Barcodes-Choosing-the-Right-Barcode-UPC-CODE.jpg only gives a number written below it, so there's no name or any other info in it. EAN/ISBN I think contains the country, and maybe a publisher, but I think that's the extent of the metadata in it.

QR codes are the ones that can contain more data, but I haven't seen that on products other than linking to websites for more info.

I recommend you Play around with "Barcode scanner" app from Play Store to see what I mean; but if you find more info, please let me know.

I will play around with it. There is another open source project called Grocy which has an add-on that allows barcode scanning from the phone https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y5YH6IJFnfc https://grocy.info/ Maybe it will offer some clues
