the tags manager displays under each tag the number of apps  It should also allow you to remove the tag. After I deleted the '18ctea' tag and pressed OK...

I think I missed the fact that you were trying to remove tags from the tag menu. To do that go to `Settings` › `Layout` › `Tags menu` 

Right now I'm working on figuring a fix for #446 I think I was looking at what Kvaesitso is doing with monochrome icons.

I'd like to go with the "Exclude from history" approach.
