Mambaforge retirement causing test failures

🐛 Bug Report

When running the CI on days that mamabaforge in unavailable (https://conda-forge.org/news/2024/07/29/sunsetting-mambaforge/) tests will fail, this caused some of the errors in #293. Mambaforge will become completely unavailable on January 2025
