Publishing but MQTT test client not updating

We are using the code from the template and we are getting IoT connected and publishing to AWS however, when we go to the MQTT Test Client and subscribe to our thing, we are not seeing any data. Are there any updates to your code between when this was published and new protocols at AWS? What are we missing?
