Please make the latest SAP GUI for Java available to pair up with the ABAP Platform trial image

I have heard about modern browser based user interfaces - and use Eclipse IDE every day at work - but I believe that for a few things, especially as a developer, SAP GUI is still a better user interface. It is therefore a pity that the latest SAP GUI for Java version available as trial download is 7.80 (revision 7). There is no documentation for revision 7 of version 7.80 at SAP Help Portal - but revision 5 is documented to be "out of mainstream maintenance". Since April 2025 version 7.80 is unsupported and an upgrade to version 8.10 is recommended at the SAP GUI family page at SAP Community .

Could you please try to convince your colleagues and product managers that the many improvements and new features that have been implemented in SAP GUI for Java version 8.10 deserve a bigger audience than those who have access to download it via S-users?

  • Chromium-based HTML control with a large number of positive side effects
  • Horizon theme family ... and not the least for us developers who are downloading SAP GUI to use it with the developer trial systems
  • Better source code editor (nice, even if Eclipse is the main IDE)
  • Better integration with Eclipse (not stated explicitly but is my interpretation of "simplifies the usage of SAP GUI for Java inside ABAP Development Tools")

I don't understand why SAP (the company) sees a benefit in restricting access to the latest version of the client software. Maybe there are many reasons, and it's just me who don't understand them. It's not as if SAP GUI for Java (or Windows for that matter) is very useful unless you have a SAP system to connect to - whether that is a full system or a developer trial version.

Speaking for myself, I don't have access to download SAP GUI for Java. Where I work it's Microsoft Windows that dominate the desktop - I don't think there are any developers who work with SAP that have a computer with Linux as the operating system. But on my own computers, 2001 was the year of the Linux Desktop. So as a SuSE/openSUSE user for 20 years (Ubuntu on a Dell XPS for a few years) it's a sad truth that finally SuSE Linux Enterprise Server has conquered SAP S/4HANA, but I can't use a supported SAP GUI on my own computer with the most closely related operating system to connect to the developer trial version of SAP S/4 HANA.

100% agree.

SAP is recommending (!) to use out-of-maintenance versions of SAP GUI for Java (https://tools.hana.ondemand.com/#abap). This is not healthy:

Please provide SAP GUI for Java 8.10.

In the name of open Source developers, Thank you 🙏

PS: developers.sap.com could use an update, too:
