Personally agree with @franklupo - having a feature that's incompatible with another isn't a deal breaker for people - it offers additional flexibility just with a caveat.

Just trying to look for a solution: what happens if the default view is multiline and the additional lines are hidden? This would satisfy the requirements of the virtualisation need...
