Static sites are definitely the best for your/our type of blogging for all the reasons you mentioned.

Your site looks great. I can tell that you put a lot of effort into it. It is very polished and has a style all your own.

Just weeks before you wrote this post, another static site generator, coding.blog, entered the scene. I don't have many web programming skills, but this seemed like a great choice to me. I also like that they host my blog for me. One less thing that I have to worry about. At the same time, I am not locked in; I can start hosting my own blog at any time.
