Widgets for accessing particular subreddits
Suggested by /u/SDKMMC:
I have been using Tapatalk 4 for forum browsing and one thing that I really love about it is the fact that they have a widget that acts like a shortcut to a specific forum inside the app. I have no idea if this is even possible, but I think this would be nice to have a shortcut to a specific subreddit, login with a specific account, or even both.
Maybe also have subreddit specific widgets where you view threads as well kind of like the Gmail widget.
Do you plan on changing parts of the Cache in v2? Maybe it's best to wait for v2 to be in alpha state so we don't have to rewrite the whole thing againg.
The cache will remain mostly the same, but I'm planning on adding some checks for free space. The main thing which could affect the widget in future would be the new subreddit manager, which could be used to select which subreddit the widget links to.
If either of you wanted to fork v2 and make a prototype widget (i.e. just make one that does something when added to the launcher, and something when clicked, e.g. just show a toast) that would be quite useful.
Thanks for the pull request Andrew, I've merged it. The next step would be to show a dialog when the widget is first added to allow the user to choose a subreddit - it could just show a few hardcoded options for now, and save the one which is selected. When the new post list fragment is done I'll add it to the widget's view.
It should also be possible to add an icon to the launcher acting as a "link" to a subreddit, using Android's shortcuts API (this is just a few lines of code, so I'll add it myself when v2's basic structure is in place).
Ill work on a widget config when I get off work today.
Since multireddit support came through, it would be really nice to be able to jump directly to my news multi from the launcher.
Any updates on this? This would be a great feature to have. Seems like the v2 branch has disappeared.
yeah widget feature is great and it is almost a year already
