Advanced demo bugs

I just checked out this repo. On Chrome, the images for the movie posters are blank. On Safari, if you click a poster, the alert is triggered twice.

This happens because you run demo from folder using file:// . In order to display content it should be run with local http server

Why does that matter, in either case?
