RFE: Translation service provider

I'm submitting a feature request

Brief Description

I notice that, when viewing any changeset, there is a ‘Translate’ link next to the CS's comment which points to Google (😒).

I offer the suggestion of a different translation service which I think is better suited. Either as a replacement, or another option to Google's proprietary hoard.

MyMemory by Translated Labs.

What is the motivation / use-case for this feature?

MyMemory is far better fitting with a libre project (both OSMCha & OSM itself):

  • multiple suggestions (from different sources; translation is an inexact science (hence humans who do it in real-time are called ‘interpreters’))
  • ‘multiple sources’ includes both a large body of human-transliterated texts, and algorithm-derived suggestions
  • users may rate the suggestions, and contribute better ones
  • there is a capable yet simple API available (which doesn't require any key) — translations may be done on the OSMCha frontend itself, instead of having to link elsewhere (as with Google)
  • from my reading of the site's literature, one may also download their dataset to use locally
  • has all the usual features you'd expect
    • many languages
    • auto-detection of source language, which may be manually selected / overridden

What is the current behaviour?

A crude link to a third-party site hosting a proprietary disservice, which seems likely to cause disruption to a user's workflow by requiring them to go off-site just to see the comment string translated into their preferred language.

What is the expected behaviour?

Integration with the Web UI for seamless translations into each user's preferred language.

Either by querying the API or using the dataset locally. Though, I strongly suspect that the API will be simpler & preferable (not to mention quicker to implement).

Else, a link to the site (parity with Google) might suffice as a quick-and-dirty stop-gap until something more elegant is implemented.

When does this occur?

Every changeset for which a user wishes to translate the comment into another language.

Please tell us about your environment:

Irrelevant(?)
