Failure to configure with cmake 3.10

CMake Error at CMakeLists.txt:21 (ADD_COMPILE_DEFINITIONS):
  Unknown CMake command "ADD_COMPILE_DEFINITIONS".

The README says that a minimum cmake version of 3.10 is required. This feature appears to be introduced with 3.12
