Keyboard unusable

Open gsstark opened this issue 7 years ago • 7 comments

Using the May 2018 GBoard keyboard release (sorry, no copy paste from Google play and the version string is ridiculous) on LineageOS 15.1.0 (Android 8.1.0).

The keyboard is completely unusable in revolution IRC. It seems after entering a word to be in a state where any new entry is discarded. So every second word is discarded. Also backspace doesn't autorepeat if you hold it down and random other characters are dropped.

The keyboard works fine in other words apps so I'm guessing it has something to do with the nick auto complete but I've tried disabling all those options and it doesn't help.

I have a suspicion as to why this happens, however I cannot reproduce on Gboard 7.2.9.197069278 and Android 8.0. I may investigate it later.

Any information how this can be reproduced are very welcome.

I've had this happen to me at random, but I don't know how to make it happen again.

This is unrelated to nick autocomplete, but it is to some formatting-related code.

I had a bug today with 0.4.1 that I think is related to this. Using an older version of the the Swype keyboard, it would enter next-word suggestions as soon as I pressed space. e.g. I want to just type I followed by a space. As soon as I pressed space, it would show Iam, as am would've been the first next-word prediction.

This behavior made proper text input impossible. Disabling autocorrect in the settings didn't help. Restarting the app fixed it however. Now I cannot reproduce it anymore.

I suspect there's a bug somewhere in input handling that results in an inconsistent state.

edit: Had this happen a couple more times in 0.5.1.

I'm not sure if this is the same issue but I have noticed in since the 0.4 series and indeed in 0.5.1 if I paste a large text message like for example:

"The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog" is an English-language pangram—a sentence that contains all of the letters of the alphabet. It is commonly used for touch-typing practice, testing typewriters and computer keyboards, displaying examples of fonts, and other applications involving text where the use of all letters in the alphabet is desired. Owing to its brevity and coherence, it has become widely known. More at "Wikipedia"

Then go back to typing, autocomplete no longer functions, This is using the Anysoftkeyboard. I've had to exit and reopen RevolutionIRC to restore auto complete functionality.

I experience this bug a lot. At first it only seemed to happen on 4g so I thought it was related to bandwidth but it happens on fast networks too.

I'm on a OnePlus 6 (android 9, latest updates) with the latest version of gboard. It happened to on a galaxy s7 with gboard. Doesn't happen in other apps.

If there's more information I can/should share let me know. Revolution is a lovely app but not being able to type normally makes it pretty much unusable.

Closing and reopening the app will solve the issue (soft-close, so just press back and then reopen the app, there's no need for a full exit/disconnect).

Thanks for the reply! That does work and it's what I've been doing. It often works only for a very short time though. Sometimes I will have to close after every line I type, then other times it will work fine for hours and misbehave.
