Include a sample sentence in term export
Question from discord: "Regarding exporting - is there any way to export an example sentence with a term?"
My response there:
Hey there. Currently no, but there should be. The challenge I had with this is selecting a good sentence. eg as I read and if I create a new term, should it just copy over the current sentence? Sometimes a term is only clear by looking at several sentences, if you're trying to get a feel for how to use it. When I look at the "sentences" tab for a term, I see a pile of usages, which can help. I couldn't figure out a clear way to choose and export them.
But all of this is perhaps me overthinking the issue, when a simple solution would suffice and give some value. Maybe it should just get the current sentence for the term, and later, if I want to change the example sentence, I could select one (or more?) of the sentences in the "sentences" tab and assign them as the example to the term.
Hey! Just to stir some discussion up — assuming this would be an interesting feature to have ("...but there should be").
I feel it would be a bad idea to have it on the main .csv that gets exported — it would make the file much bigger, and possibly rather unreadable? — but maybe on a separate .csv, with each example corresponding to a Term on the Lute database.
As for introducing other sentences: if instead of having a sentences tab on the dictionary query pane, it were on the Term window above — possibly via a tab, too — then one could query the current sentences it is used on, but also, via an input box, for example, introduce new example sentences of usage. And these examples could be sourced from the information on the dictionary query pane. Does that make sense?
The "sentences" tab is a query for the texts you've read, moving it to the term box is just placement :-)
Re "introduce new example sentences of usage" -- that's kind of outside of Lute's area, I had figured that examples are best gathered just by reading more. I do sometimes put an example in the "translation" box. Maybe these examples would be better placed in a "notes" field, for which there's an issue: #235
Having the example in the csv would allow for imports into Anki or whatever for people who want them. I understand your concern, though -- I don't think the file is to be read, but rather processed as an import into something else. I was also thinking about the sentence export for something like a direct connection to Anki, which is another thing kicking around: #3 :-)
- one of the most important things for me is being able to see the word used in context. If it's as easy as just displaying the query in the vocab section as well, i hope you can implement that. If not I will dig into it try to make it work for me because that's super useful
- i have a spreadsheet of sentences from my source material so then I just ctrl+f in there to find the word and copy that sentence into anki if I need it.
- I'm not big on exporting every word anyway, but I do think a super viable option would be what you mentioned JZ, just pick the last one. Super easy to implement I would think. And give the user options if/when you have time.
