I was having the same issue with atom. (overwriting the file with nothing and then {}, Ctrl + z a couple times would restore the data. ).

Didn't seem to require atom-json-editor to be installed.

When I had a file.schema.json file in the same directory as file.json... it would cause this issue

Same here. Just lost a pretty big, hand-crafted file. Uninstalling.
