What @Poussinou describes is practiced in Cuba, due to "flaky Internet". There's an article on that somewhere on the F-Droid site. Another example for "blocked access" are firewalls and filters....

Also don't forget the "prestige". Other than apps from Playstore, those on F-Droid are checked and then build from source – no trackers or other "unexpected stuff". There are folks...
