Summary Meeting Notes
The GSF Standards Working Group reviewed the SCI for AI project's transition into the primary working group, with Henry and Naveen serving as project chairs. They suggested establishing a weekly meeting rhythm for the initial months to advance the SCI for AI development. The group emphasized the necessity of engaging experts and ensuring that the SCI for AI aligns with the positioning paper and white paper from the Green AI committee. Furthermore, they evaluated the AI workshop's progress, which has shifted from foundational discussions to addressing specific issues. The meeting wrapped up with updates regarding the immersion cooling specification, the mycelium project, and the suspension of the software carbon efficiency rating due to potential conflicts with an upcoming certification program.
Minutes
Leadership and Meeting Structure for the SCI for AI Project Sean raises a question about the project's leadership, proposing it be reintegrated into the Standards Working Group. He also suggests maintaining a weekly meeting schedule for the initial two to three months, akin to the SCI project approach. Henry concurs and recommends promoting the meetings vigorously during the AI workshop to draw in participants.
Transitioning SCI for AI into the Standards Working Group Sean confirms that Henry and Naveen will lead the SCI for the AI project. Henry and Sean Mcilroy talk about the advantages of integrating the SCI for AI into the main Standards Working Group to prevent scheduling conflicts. Henry and Naveen reviewed the timing for the final AI workshop and outlined the next steps for the SCI for the AI project. Sean highlights the need to make the most of the meeting time dedicated to the SCI for AI project.
Progress and Deliverables of the AI Workshop Henry provides a brief overview of the AI workshop, emphasizing the foundational discussions and specific issues addressed. Sean and Henry talk about the timeline for developing the SCI for AI into a solid specification, anticipating it will take three to four months. Navveen and Thomas emphasize the need to engage experts to utilize their knowledge effectively. Thomas expresses concerns regarding the alignment of the SCI for AI with the positioning paper and white paper from the Green AI committee.
Coordination with Green AI Committee and Workshop Outcomes Thomas emphasizes the need for the SCI for AI to align with the Green AI committee's scope and requirements. Henry mentions the creation of a new repository for the SCI for AI and the need to refine and edit the initial structure. Sean and Henry discuss the importance of having a rudimentary baseline spec for the working group to collaborate. Navveen and Thomas highlight the need to synergize the workshop's outcomes with the Green AI committee's requirements.
Survey on Working Group Scope and Future Directions Sean has launched a survey to assess both the current scope and future directions of the working group. This survey features questions regarding specifications that are not directly related to the SCI, including procurement. He intends to distribute the survey via the newsletter and collect responses over the coming weeks. The goal of the survey is to offer valuable insights for the chairs to inform their decisions on resource allocation and upcoming projects.
Introduction of New Hardware Specifications Chris presents the immersion cooling specification along with its advantages for heat recovery and reuse. He addresses the difficulties associated with existing immersion cooling systems, such as the requirement for large tanks and hoists. Chris suggests an immersion-first design to enhance the efficiency of immersion cooling while minimizing complications. Additionally, he proposes creating profiles for direct-to-chip equipment to standardize pressure levels and flow rates.
Mycelium Project and Software-Hardware Integration Chris presents the Mycelium project, which seeks to create a standard data model for software to interact with hardware and infrastructure. This initiative enables advanced software to make informed decisions based on the conditions of the underlying infrastructure. Chris notes discussions with Kubernetes, Cube, and other orchestration platforms to generate interest. The Mycelium project focuses on refining its scope and establishing standard data model representations.
Coordination and Participation in New Specifications Sean highlights the necessity for better coordination within the organization to select participants for the new specifications. Chris and Sean Mcilroy discuss the significance of including the appropriate individuals in immersion cooling and Mycelium projects. Filippo from Shell shows interest in joining the immersion cooling project and collaborating with Chris. Sean intends to distribute a PR to promote the new initiatives and inform the working group about the forthcoming projects. He also announces a pause on the software carbon efficiency rating due to potential conflicts with a certification program. This program is anticipated to address issues related to the software's carbon efficiency rating. Henry and Sean Mcilroy concur that halting the rating is a wise decision to prevent resource conflicts.
