Help users learn how to disable Privacy Badger for a site

Despite various improvements to the popup (#2563, #2748), it's become clear that a significant proportion of users still doesn't know that one can disable Privacy Badger for a specific site. Such users tend to uninstall Privacy Badger when Privacy Badger breaks a site they depend on.

I think at this point a big part of not knowing how to disable for a site is not knowing that Privacy Badger has a "popup", a little window that you can open by clicking on Privacy Badger's icon in your browser toolbar. This problem seems to exist in both Chrome and Firefox, although Chrome makes it worse by hiding extension icons inside the puzzle piece menu.

We could help users learn what to do when a site breaks by first showing where Privacy Badger's toolbar icon lives and that clicking it will open the popup. We should then point out how to disable Privacy Badger for a site. We could do this as part of the new user welcome page experience.

This will be the first major update to the new user welcome page since #1736. We no longer need to communicate why Privacy Badger isn't blocking anything on the first couple of sites you visit. While we should still talk about Privacy Badger being different and mention GPC/DNT, we should prioritize showing how to disable Privacy Badger for a site.

We should consider some combination of the following:

• Show an arrow or a speech balloon that points to where Privacy Badger's icon should be in a given browser (for example)
• Show how to pin Privacy Badger's icon in Chrome (for example (step 3))
• Rework the intro page layout to whatever makes the most sense given our new communication priorities

The styling mimics the existing "pop up" UI for consistency. Could you review this approach, the text, and prehaps the UI elements used as well?

Cool, thanks for the mockup! Some thoughts:

1. It would be helpful to highlight/label (as step 1) the puzzle piece icon as well as the pin icon (step 2) in the screenshot
2. The screenshot shouldn't show any other extensions or anything not relevant to what we're trying to communicate (such as the circle V icon behind the puzzle piece menu)
3. While the puzzle piece menu/suggestion to pin is specific to Chrome, the problem of not knowing how to open Privacy Badger's popup exists in both Chrome and Firefox
4. When we show how to open Privacy Badger's popup, it should be in the context of showing how to disable Privacy Badger for a site. For example, the "pin the extension for easy access" wording is too vague. Why is the popup important? It lets you easily disable Privacy Badger for a site.
5. I am not sure the speech bubble popup is the right approach for Privacy Badger (good to consider it though!). We should update the entire new user intro page to refocus on our current priorities, removing what's no longer relevant. The speech bubble is a separate piece of UI on top of the page. Ideally there is only one "call to action", the page is entirely focused on what we need to communicate.

Also, we support Firefox on Android, which doesn't show extension icons in the toolbar, you have to open the main browser menu to see them.

Let's make sure to consider the feedback in #2802 and #2797 when we work on updated welcome page wording. Might be as simple (for now) as replacing "your wishes" with "these signals".

Will want to mirror whatever we go with across all channels (README, website, store descriptions).

It would also be nice if PB would actually remember the choice being made. I do web development and constantly have to disable PB for the very same websites while I am working on them, basically to get rid of its console error messages.

Hi @WebMechanic, could you open a new issue for your bug? Please describe your situation in more detail. Which browser do you use? When does Privacy Badger fail to remember your preferences? The more details, the better. Thank you!
