All Tabs in all Groups lost
Describe the bug since only a few days, my Tabs of all Groups are lost. The Groups are still there, but the tab counter is showing (0) for every Group. I can make a restore with the backup-feature of simple-ta-groups that bring all tabs back (without favicons, you have to reload the Tab), but if I close Firefox and open it again, the Tabs are lost again.
To Reproduce Steps to reproduce the behavior:
- Make some groups with some tabs inside (make a Backup in simple-tab-groups, optional)
- Click on "Close" in Firefox
- Restart Firefox
- If you click on the simple-tab-groups Icon, you become a list of your Groups, but the count of tabs is (0). If you go inside the groups, there were none of your saved tabs inside the group
Expected behavior The tabs in the groups of simple-tab-groups should not lose after close and restart Firefox
Desktop (please complete the following information):
- OS and version: Linux Mint 21.1
- Firefox version: 113.0.2
- Simple Tab Groups version: v5.2
Additional context Obviously, the Error appears after the last Firefox Update or the last simple-tab-groups update I make. Maybe it takes both to bring up the Error. The Error seems to be the same as Issue #1061
Update Today I start the PC and all tabs are back - this was never the case in the last few days. Every day I turn the PC on & off, but the tabs are still lost, and I have to use an older Backup. I make no System-, Firefox- or any else Updates, I don't understand this. I will monitor this the next days and weeks. If I wrongly suspected your plugin, I'm sorry, I've been using it for a very long time without any problems. If it's OK I'll leave the ticket open for another week, if I don't get back to you, we can close it I guess.
Although this is a duplicate of #1061, I have closed that one since this has a better description. @MarcBoe67 I did try doing a backup, but only the archived groups end up in the backup. Does anyone know where firefox stores the data so I can retrieve it manually? I'd be happy with just a plain text list of urls at this point.
Reading @MarcBoe67 's comments again I realized he was talking about old backups. Turns out I had auto backup running and was able to find all the tabs I had lost! Thanks @MarcBoe67 for the hint that helped me solve my problem.
I am experiencing the same issue since I migrated to a new Windows 11 PC over the past 4 days.
I have lost more than a few tabs over the past few days, and the manual version control is dizzying.
This bug is slowing everything down. UUUuuugGggggghhhhhh. The frequent need to' save and reload' is making a simple elegant tool like Simple Tag Group... just another annoying and distracting add-on. In addition, it duplicates my persistent pinned tabs and you can see tab names in the group lists - it starts with an asterisk (*) followed by the last tab name in the group. See image.
HELP PLEASE!!!
Missed this issue before writing mine, so I'll just paste it here (may help to pin down the issue):
Describe the bug After restarting (closing and reopening) Firefox all tabs (except pinned) are missing while all groups are still there (but empty). This used to work 1 or 2 months ago without issue and I couldn't pin down anything that changed.
To Reproduce Steps to reproduce the behavior:
- Close Firefox
- Open Firefox
- Tabs are missing
Expected behavior Tabs are still there.
Desktop (please complete the following information):
- OS and version: Arch Linux, Windows 11
- Firefox version: Multiple Versions, at least: 117.0a1-118.0a1 (on Linux), 115.0.3 (on Windows)
- Simple Tab Groups version: 5.2
Additional context Debug Log: STG-debug-logs.json
Things I noticed:
- Pinned tabs are unaffected
- Firefox restart after Nightly update perseveres tabs
- Restoring backup (without pinned tabs) works (my current work-around)
I figured it out: Firefox have change the setting "Restore session" to "Open previous windows and tabs" and just disabled it without notice. An alternative explanation (at least in my case) would be an issue with Firefox Sync messing things up.
It might be worth checking for all tab groups are empty on start and remind the user to check the setting again.
See the STG setup guides:
I've always had "Restore previous session" enabled and when it changed to "Open previous windows and tabs" it was still enabled after I upgraded to the new version (whatever version it was that made that change), so not sure why your setting got changed.

I've noticed this tends to happen (losing my tab groups and having to restore from a backup) when firefox updates
@MarcBoe67 This issue looks like a duplicate of the #1035 that has more details and research results (performed by @zkhcohen). I would like to propose you to close this issue and track the issue in the the #1035. So it will help other impacted users to track status in one issue instead of many. Thank you in advance.
