Game crashes during loads

Frequent game crashes happen on the load screens. Typically the stage will start loading, freeze and subsequently crash to the desktop.

It happens exactly like this.

I suspect this may be due to the loading screens not pumping windows messages - is any overlay in use here? It may be getting confused by that and causing crashes.

An overlay as in Steam overlay, or do you mean when using something like OBS?

Anything that'd inject into the game - so I suspect OBS can too. Steam Overlay was confirmed to deal with this quirk fine, so it is not impossible that OBS doesn't appreciate what the game does there.
