FR: Webcam-only recording mode and full-size webcam layer in editor

Hi! Thank you for this amazing project! I’d like to suggest two features that would make CAP even more powerful and flexible for content creators:

Webcam-only recording mode (without screen) It would be great to have an option to record just the webcam — without screen or window capture. This would enable quick vlog-style videos, talking head content, and personal updates. Many Mac users (like myself) take advantage of the high-quality FaceTime camera with macOS Studio Effects like background blur, which makes this format very appealing. Right now, CAP only supports screen or window recording, so this addition would open up new creative workflows. (similar tools like PolyCapture are exploring this, but CAP already feels far more polished and user-friendly.)

Ability to switch webcam to full screen in the editor After recording a screencast with a webcam overlay, it would be incredibly helpful if the webcam video could be treated as a separate full-resolution video layer in the built-in editor. This would allow users to switch the webcam feed to full screen at specific moments during editing, creating smooth cutaways and transitions without needing external software. This will greatly simplify the production process, allowing you to shoot a full video simply by using your laptop and your app.

@iakovalgaev came here to request this feature only, for utube recording i want at start to show webcam only in editor handling this would be nice option.

I'm looking to switch from loom to cap (and currently pay for both), but I can't do that until I have camera-only video recording in both instant and studio modes, though it's absence in instant mode is the real dealbreaker now - your recent release kinda makes this possible in studio mode.

So I have two questions:

  1. Is this planned on your roadmap anytime soon?
  2. Is there any existing work or discussions on this which I could look at (I might be happy to work on this and open a PR)

Hey everyone! Thanks for your comments. You can now create fullscreen camera Scenes in the editor.

How would you imagine this working for Instant Mode?

hey @richiemcilroy - I had to tinker for a while until I saw the option in the timeline. I think for instant mode it would be nice to add a camera icon that when hovered says "Camera Only" to the left side of the "Select Area" button. I've also attached an image of Loom's interface if you would like some inspiration as to their implementation

Yep, exactly like loom does it. Just the ability to select "Camera Only" or similar from the screen recording dropdown and have the recorded video use the camera feed in place of the screen recording.

Hey @richiemcilroy – any update on this? Like I said, I'd be happy to help if I can, given some pointers re where to start.
