Wrong type returned from functions

When compiling on linux, I had those errors. Since they are not linux specific, I opened this PR.

Thanks @minirop! The project is on hold for now for reasons explained in the Doomworld post below, so unfortunately I can't merge in any changes at this time. I'll leave this PR open for sometime later in the future when the project is active again.

I ended up implementing some of these fixes myself as part of a larger series of changes to implement Linux support for 1.0.0. As a result this PR is now redundant - hence closing out.
