Search function not working with early Leaf games
Hello, I’ve tried using the “search for specific text” function many times in Shizuku/Kizuato/Toheart, but even when I know I’ve entered the correct text (細いシャープペンシル)!!! I get the same “text not found” result. I know it’s supposed to work, so if there are any specific settings I need to apply, please let me know
Strange. Maybe this'll work? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AcEgjCoww5w
That video is basically what Textractor automatically does, so following it step by step might pinpoint the issue. Also remember text match has to be exact, and Japanese punctuation is different . vs 。 and ( vs (
I tried, and the really weird thing is-- cheat engine doesn't come up with anything either! This is really, really odd. Should I send you my copy of the game?
It's really really strange though I have seen it happen a few times. I can try taking a look, so feel free to send, but you should also make sure the game doesn't spawn some additional process like I've seen some games where you have to attach to some main.bin process instead of the exe.

Could this be the issue https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Halfwidth_and_fullwidth_forms ? I know that google doesn't suffer from this problem when you search but there are forums where you do not get any results if the title is written on Halfwidth or Fullwidth and vice-versa.

I'm pretty sure it's all full-width characters, and I've searched for sentences without katakana too. I was wondering if paragraph indents had something to do with it, but searching with those didn't yield any results either.
After lots of hopeless fiddling around I’ve tentatively concluded that these Leaf games just use really weird text encoding, buuuuut... I noticed that if I use the automatic search (not specific text), I do get some kinds of hooks that advance with the ingame text, but they’re all garbage characters. Trying to make hook codes with the addresses I get hasn’t yielded any results though. (whoops, closed by accident)
garbage characters? sounds like a bad font... maybe try to change the font in-game and also on Textractor main window.
I just remember that some old Elf games and Silky's ones like 風紀委員長 聖薇 required you to edit the AI6WIN.ini in the game directory by changing [font] "Type = 1" to "Type = 0" so it should disable caching and there will be a thread with full text. Not sure if it is helpful to you but this is how you hooked the text from those games.
Since I'm not getting any results on cheat engine either (via string or hex+array of byte search) I'm just gonna choose to believe it's custom encoding for the time being. These leaf games don't have a font option or any sort of relevant .ini files in the directory, so...
Looking at VnDB i see that some of the Leaf games got translated so if the games you like to play is one of those you'd better of getting the translation patch. Plus some of the games got re-released over time (they often do this to improve compatibility and such) and sometimes it's easier to hook the text from either an older or newer release, feel free to try it yourself.
There's a bunch of hcodes for Leaf games here https://vn-hooking.fandom.com/wiki/H-Code including the ones you mentioned 雫 (Shizuku) and 痕 (Kizuato). Note that some of these codes only work if you update the game to a newer version or use an old operation system. Also could be worth trying them with AGTH, ITH or VNR if Textractor doesn't work for you. You can also try hooking with https://github.com/0xDC00/agent instead.
If anything else fails you can always go the route of OCR with something like Visual Novel OCR
I play VNs to learn Japanese and I prefer the older graphics, so those options are off the table :9 none of the hook codes worked with the older versions and OCR is persnickety so I might just save these for when I’m more 上手 at the 日本語
Odd that not even Agent worked... it appears that old Leaf games used some weird unique font created by them.. I assume you have your OS unicode set to Japanese or are using some tool like Locale Emulator to run the games and avoid garbage characters, in any case you appear to have the very old release of the games, these games have been re-released multiple times (remakes included) and the hcodes provided are supposed to be used with the 'newer' releases, you should check VNDB for more info on that plus the official site also has some list https://leaf.aquaplus.jp/product/eol.html
[Leaf] 雫 /HBN-C@4B2BAD /KF >>> this code should work if you are running an older version of Windows like XP (you may need to have to install it on a Virtual Machine such as VirtualBox)
[Leaf] 雫-しずく- DVD: /HB14@47D460 /kf >>> this code is only supposed to work with the DVD release of Shizuku and it may require some special loader plus try it without the /KF and see if it works
[Leaf] 痕-きずあと- /HBN-4@4AFCEA /KF >>> this code should work if you are running an older version of Windows and it also may require using the special loader
[AQUAPLUS] ToHeart /HAN-4@40C4F6 /pnpsth.exe (use /pn) >>> this code is only supposed to work with v1.00 of the PSE release of ToHeart
Also this might be useful to known https://web.archive.org/web/20151031053247/http://www.hongfire.com/forum/showthread.php/36807-AGTH-text-extraction-tool-for-games-translation?p=1933619#post1933619
Could be also worth trying updating the game with the official patches https://leaf.aquaplus.jp/support/sup_old.html Looks like they address old OS compatibility (requiring windows service pack update and such) and the font issue there. And needless to say that hcodes sometimes only work with specific updated versions of the game so who knows..
BTW since you play with the intention of learning Japanese I will just drop this here if you don't know about this tools already (they are kinda like a successor to Translation Aggregator, Chiitrans, VNR, and so on) who knows some of them might be able to hook the game or you can just try the OCR options in them:
https://game2text.com/ https://vntranslator.carrd.co/ https://github.com/Zoltanar/Happy-Reader
The games themselves run fine on win10, there aren't any issues with font display, my OS is always JP region, and if I can't get any text with cheat engine array of byte search or digging through the game's memory I highly doubt other text hookers will do anything. The newer releases aren't just 'updates', they're entirely new games built with a completely different engine and system and therefore anything you try on them will not work on the older releases. I appreciate your efforts but I've done literally everything and I'm just gonna let this go now (unless Artikash figures something out eventually)
Reopening because why not :p
Hello, i've tried the hook code that the friend provided HB14@47D460 for the dvd version. It starts just spamming buch of words and textractor becomes very laggy.
This is my first time trying to play a game with a translator machine so im a bit a lost.
This seems like a lost cause so I'm wondering if anyone out there has the programming knowledge to make their own hook codes for games like this where searching for text doesn't do anything :( I've done so much googling and looking in archived hongfire threads but i never seem to find anything
