[Feature Request] Option to change behavior of the backspace key.

I've been trying to overtype on some written text, and I find myself often pressing backspace to correct a mistake. This, however, leads to the removal of a character, as expected. However, in this kind of situation I would deeply appreciate an option to make backspace replace the previous character by a blank space, and move the cursor backwards, that way one can backspace to correct characters, and not upset the already written text.
