Study about quad velomobil, buildable with standard tools
I like your idea of a minimal "car". Seing that you have a background with gasoline karts, I want to open a perspective from quasi the other side, with bicycles. There are velomobiles. Full faired, mostly 3 wheeled recumbents which can travel +-50km/h on a flat with about 150 watts of power input. They weight usually less then 30kg. However they are very specialized and not buildable by hand with usual tools. https://www.velomobiel.nl/quest/ However there was this project about a quad design, which was designed to be build with household tools and electric motors in mind. Maybe you find use in this documentation. https://www.velomobilforum.de/forum/index.php?threads/studie-zum-bau-eines-vierrades-quad.39547/ If you find no value in this post, pls close silently (:
Sorry for the very late response, I have been working through UNI, and still don't have enough funds to carry through with this project yet. I find this quite fascinating, however I would probably shift this paradime a little bit. If your going this minimal, without the care of storage space or passengers, I would argue that the most hackable vehicle by far would be an electric bike/moped.
The advantages of this design is enormous
- Incredibly simple and common steering mechanism of a tube inside another tube
- Having only 2 wheels actually GETS RID OF THE NEED FOR SUSPENSION with many commercial emopeds lacking any suspention whatsoever.
- A quite literal over-abundance of mass-produced parts
- Easy swap-ability with literally anything else, bikes have standard everything (tires, handelbars, pegs, everythings swap-able)
- Visibility and commonality (bikes are accepted, normal, and expected to see in traffic, sit-down bikes are a lot more dangerous in a lot of situations)
If you get rid of the petals (which are really only there for legal reasons) these mopeds literally have:
- 2 moving parts (both wheels) if you have hub motors
- 4 moving parts (wheels, chain, motor) if you use an external motor
However I will admit, this still looks very cool, and minimal nonetheless, thanks for the suggestion.
